WAVE DEFEAT RIVAL COMETS IN HARD FOUGHT BATTLE FRIDAY NIGHT IN MILWAUKEE
After an emotional loss at Kansas City Comets last Sunday, the 7-time champion Milwaukee Wave came back for redemption on their home turf at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena Friday night.
“We had a fantastic finish tonight," said Head Coach Giuliano Oliviero. "It's not the way we wanted it to go, once we’re up 6-1 but you know, Derek Huffman and Ian Bennett put it out of reach and were able to get three points.”
Kansas City Comets scored the first goal of the game, but the Wave hit back with a total of five points in the first half, ending at 5-1 Wave. The Comets made a valiant effort, gaining two additional goals in the third quarter and 4 more in the final quarter, but ultimately fell victim of another Milwaukee Wave win. The final score reflected the great black and yellow blood of the Wave as it reached 9-7, Wave win.
As a well-known rivalry, Oliviero had a few comments on the Kansas City Comets as well. “We’re all fighting to get into the playoffs and for positioning and using home field advantage. Every game matters. We want to do well at home, and we want to do well for our fans, and that’s going to help us come play-off time.”
The Wave has woken from its slumber and has undoubtedly brought the intensity that their fans love. The game was fast-paced and saw several unique events including multiple penalty cards and the temporary removal of the Comet’s goalkeeper to add an extra defender on the field. Despite their best efforts and all their extra stops, the Comets still fell short of the Wave’s intensity.
Derek Huffman was named PCI’s Hardest Working Player of the Game. When asked about this achievement Huffman stated, “… a lot of hard work goes in during the week… it comes out in game day.”
The two teams will meet again in the new year (January 21st) back on the Comet’s turf with a 6:05 CT kickoff from Cable Dahmer Arena.
Up next for Milwaukee, the tradition that is the New Year's Eve game on Saturday, December 31st at Panther Arena as the Wave take on Utica City FC at 3:05pm CT.
Tickets are available at MilwaukeeWave.comor at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena Box Office prior to kick-off.
