TENTH ANNIVERSARY

by Lindsay Durham

On Saturday, October 25, 2014 Vahid Assadpour scored the very first goal in the Major Arena Soccer League. He was assisted by Bryan Perez with 11:18 to go in the first quarter to put the Comets up 1-0 at Dallas.

Leo Gibson had seven points that night, a number that has now risen to 455. Danny Waltman earned the win in goal for the Comets topping the Sidekicks 13-4 in front of 4008 fans. Waltman, now with the Tacoma Stars can still be found near the top of the leader boards making 1933 career saves.

Since that first game the MASL’s players have gone on to score 20,315 additional goals.

In honor of the league’s tenth anniversary, we are taking a moment to step back and reflect on the league’s history. A new logo to mark the milestone was created to celebrate the past, present and future of the MASL. The logo will appear throughout the rest of the season across social media and broadcasts.

A new series, hosted by Erik Bergrud, will highlight some of the best untold stories of the league’s tenure from the voices of those who have lived it. The first episode launches this Friday and can be viewed on all the league’s social media platforms.

“I was so honored to be invited by the Major Arena Soccer League to host this new ‘Ten for Ten’ series, said Bergrud. “We intend to celebrate the league’s tenth anniversary through storytelling, while introducing long-time and new fans alike to ten individuals who have made personal and professional commitments on behalf of the sport we love so much.”

Episode One starts with Commissioner Keith Tozer reflecting on what it feels like to lift a championship trophy, the pride of seeing former players take on coaching roles in the league and his favorite moment from the last ten years.

Fans can catch new episodes weekly. Upcoming episodes include Shelly Clark of the St. Louis Ambush and Ryan Cigich, MASL Head of Officials.
