Clarification on Head to Head
In the event three or more teams involved are in a head to head tiebreaker, all teams involved must have played each other an equal amount of games in order to apply the tiebreaker. If they have not played each other an equal amount of games, the next tiebreaker of goal differential is used.
MASL Tiebreaker Procedures
The following points system and guidelines will be used to implement MASL tiebreakers for all ties involving two or more teams:
Standings will be based on a 3-2-1 point system. A team winning in regulation time will receive three points in the standings, while the losing team will receive none. For an overtime or shoot-out win, a team will be awarded two points and a single point will go to the losing team.
The total number of points accumulated by a team will determine their ranking in the standings. Should teams be tied at the end of the regular season, the following tiebreakers will determine the order of finish:
- Wins in regulation time
- Total number of wins
- Head to Head results
- Goal differential
- Goals scored
- Goals allowed
MASL Format for Ron Newman Cup Playoffs
Each division’s regular season champion will advance to the playoffs and will be seeded #1 through #3, based on their regular-season point total. Regular Season finishers #4 through #8 will receive Wild Card spots based on their point total.
Quarterfinal round of playoffs will feature:
- 1 vs. 8
- 2 vs. 7
- 3 vs. 6
- 4 vs. 5
Semifinal
The winners of the quarterfinals will advance to the semifinal round. When the matchups are formed for the semifinals the highest seeded team remaining will play the lowest seeded team and the remaining two teams will play each other.
Championship
Winners of each Semifinal will advance to the Championship.
All series will be a home and home format and if the teams are tied with one win each, they will play a 15 minute Extra Time period. If they are still tied, it will advance to golden-goal overtime.
EXTRA TIME (Playoffs Only):
If the playoff series is tied after the 2nd game, there will be an additional Extra Time Period which will be treated as an entirely new game. The 1st period of the extra time will be a full 15-minute period. New lineups will be submitted just like the start of a new game. If tied after the 1st full 15-minute period, additional overtime periods of 10-minutes sudden victory periods will be played. The extra time period will begin 15-minutes after the conclusion of the prior game. Accumulated time penalties and fouls will not carry over from the prior game to the extra time period with the exception of red cards. A player issued a red card in the prior game will be suspended for the extra time period. Teams will be permitted two (2) 60-second timeouts in extra time. There will be no media timeouts. Each team will be permitted (1) one challenge during extra time that will initiate a VR. Each period will be treated as a quarter in regards to player foul accumulation. If a player accumulates 4 fouls in two periods (Extra Time and one 10-minute golden goal period); the penalty is a 2-minute power play.
